Pastel Pink

From clothes to nails, pastel colors have taken over the beauty industry. Hair color is no exception and we love seeing the different colors people use to dye their hair. Pastel pink is one popular example of this and with celebrities recently showing off this hair color, it’s sure to be a popular shade this summer! This light hair color will look amazing against the flowers that this time of year brings.

Caramel Ribbons

If you’re a brunette and not looking to dramatically lighten your hair for summer, then caramel ribbons could be a great option. This balayage style allows you to keep your beautiful dark hair color, while also giving your hair something extra for the warmer season. With the lighter tones in your hair, this will be a great way for the sun to show off your new shade!

Add Some Sparkle and Shine to Your Look this Holiday Season!

Happy holiday season from everyone at The Salon Professional Academy (TSPA), Cedar Falls! It’s a beautiful time of year for twinkling lights, sparkling snow, and glowing firelight. Do you know what else can glow this season? Your makeup! Follow these tips to get your best glow ever.

Try Out Glitter Eyeliner

Glitter eyeliner might seem like costume makeup, but it can be a great way to add some serious sparkle to your holiday look! If you want a classic glitter, choose a silver or gold glitter. For something extra special, try a green, blue, pink, or purple glitter liner. Glitter eyeliner looks beautiful layered on top of black winged liner, paired with a smokey eye, or just completely on its own. It’s a great way to mix things up from the same old black eyeliner you’ve been wearing all year long. Be a little bold this season and try it out!

Make Your Face Glow

Ever heard the term “lit from within”? That’s how you want to look during the holiday season! Looking glowy and radiant obviously starts with your skin care routine. Skin tends to get dry during the winter, so make sure you’re using a good combination of moisturizer, toner, and serum to keep things hydrated. Once you’ve got the skin care down, it’s time to go at it with the highlighter! Depending on your highlighting technique, you can create a subtle glow or an extreme shimmer. To avoid looking like a disco ball, stick to areas you literally want to highlight, like the cheekbones, brow bone, and the bridge of your nose.

Get a Palette that Sparkles

Make your holiday glow easy with a palette that does it all. Shimmery eyeshadow/highlight palettes are all over the place, especially during this time of year. With so many options, there’s a palette for anyone’s taste! Like glowy pink and red tones? How about sparkly neutrals or bold metallics? There’s a perfect palette out there for all of these and much, much more! Sparkly palettes also happen to make great holiday gifts. If you’ve been nice this year, consider putting one on your wishlist!

Create Lustrous Lips

Even though matte lips are a reigning trend year after year, we think there’s still a place for the high shine lip. Lip gloss and lipsticks with shimmer are perfect for the holiday season. Glow looks beautiful on the eyes and face, so why not include the lips? When applying a glossy lip, keep in mind that the product will move around more than matte formulas. Exfoliate and moisturize your lips ahead of time, just as you would with a matte lip, to keep things from slipping around too much. Applying a lip pencil beforehand can also help the product stay put throughout the day. To add an extra touch of festivity, use a lip gloss with glitter in it!

Go for the Gold

In the realm of holiday makeup colors, you really can’t get more festive than gold. Luckily, gold makeup is all over the place! Highlighter, eyeshadow, bronzer, nail polish, and even lip gloss can be found in golden tones. It not only adds a festive touch to your makeup, but it’s a great way to create a glowing warmth that’s perfect for combatting the cold weather. This year don’t keep gold reserved for your jewelry. Put it on your face and nails!

How to Maintain Your Beard During No-Shave November

Thinking of participating in “No-Shave November”? Ready to put on a beanie, flannel shirt, and let your beard go crazy? Before you let things get too wild, remember that a good beard is a well-groomed beard. The team at The Salon Professional Academy (TSPA), Cedar Falls wants you to know that just because it’s November does not mean you need to let your facial hair get scraggly and out of hand! Keep things clean and dapper this November and follow these grooming tips!

Wash Your Beard Regularly

Just like the hair on top of your head, your beard needs to be washed regularly. Our bodies produce natural oils which can cause greasy feeling hair. Washing your beard prevents this natural oil from building up and making the hair feel dirty. However, make sure you’re not overwashing your beard. Frequent washing will strip away those natural oils and leave you with a dry beard. You might assume you can use hair shampoo on a beard, but that’s not the case. Facial hair is different than the hair on your head because it comes into contact with food, drink, and others elements. Using a high-quality beard wash will keep the hair feeling and looking great.

Invest in Beard Oil

Once you’ve washed your beard, restore some of that moisture with beard oil. A good beard oil serves as a leave-in conditioner and balances the natural oils in your beard and on your skin. Your bard oil should be applied once a day after you get out of the shower, since the hair best absorbs oil when it is wet. Beard oils are usually made of natural, essential oils like tea tree, grape seed, argan, and jojoba. Using beard oil not only conditions and moisturizes, it can also prevent viral, bacterial, and fungal infections.

Get a Trim

You get your hair trimmed to keep things looking neat and clean, right? You should do the same for your beard. Regular trims can remove split ends and help your beard grow fuller and thicker. Without trimming, a beard will start to look like a scraggly mess. Getting a trim doesn’t mean taking length off your beard, it’s simply a way to keep things groomed and tidy. At TSPA Cedar Falls, we’re offering a special on beard trimming throughout November so you can keep things looking sleek and tamed.

Buy a Beard Brush and Comb

Another important part of beard grooming is using a beard brush and comb. Beard combs work great for detangling and smoothing hair when it is wet, while beard brushes are best for dry hair. A beard brush is usually made of animal hair like boar or horse, since these materials are known for reducing frizz and tangles and evenly distributing oils throughout hair. Combs are often made of smooth, natural materials like sandalwood, a durable material that helps prevent static.

Keep Your Face Moisturized

If the skin on your face is too dry or too oily, it’s going to affect your beard. When extra oil is produced it can make your beard feel greasy. If your skin is too dry underneath a beard it can start to feel irritable and itchy. Using a daily facial moisturizer keeps your skin hydrated, balanced, and smooth. This makes it easier to grow and take care of a beard. Moisturizer is also extremely important after shaving in order to prevent razor burn, irritation, and dry skin.

Ready for Autumn? Here Are Some Top Trends to Try This Fall!

Fall is upon us. That means it’s time for cooler temperatures, changing leaves, and of course, fall beauty trends! With all the beautiful styles and colors to choose from, autumn trends are always some of the year’s most beautiful looks. To give you a hand in the decision-making process, we’ve chosen five of our favorite trends for you to try out this fall!

Bold Cheeks and Lips

No matter what year it is, fall is always the season for bold red and purple tones. While a dark, autumnal lip looks great with understated makeup, pairing it with a strong cheek is a fun way to play with color. It’s all about matching your lipstick with a blush in the same color family. The trick is to not go so heavy on the blush that your lips need to compete with your cheeks. If you’re wearing a dark wine-colored lipstick, choose a blush that looks like a watered down version of that color. Going for a classic red? Choose a rosy-toned blush to create the perfect balance!

Strong Brows

With so many eyebrow trends and brow products on the market, bold brows have been a staple trend of the last few years. For strong brows that are still natural, try out an at-home brow staining or tinting product. These products come with a delicate spoolie brush that is designed to fit between each brow hair and create darker, fuller eyebrows without over-shaping them. The strokes you create with these products look like natural hair, rather than filled in or tattooed on eyebrows.

Smudged Eyeliner

For a sultry, night-out look, try the smudged eyeliner trend. Using a pencil or crayon eyeliner, apply it as you normally would on the top and bottom lashline. After this, use a cotton swab or small sponge to soften and smudge the harsh lines. If the smudging is too messy, take another cotton swab, dip it in makeup remover of your choice, and clean up any excess product. The result of this is an edgy, undone look that is perfect for a crisp autumn night on the town.

Sleek Ponytail

This is an easy and oh-so-stylish hairstyle that you can easy create in about two minutes. So if you like to hit the snooze button, or you’re just into a no-fuss routine, a sleek ponytail is a great choice. It looks stunning on straight, smooth hair, but it also works for voluminous curls. Keep the top part smooth by using a comb and smoothing product and gather it all into a ponytail. Whether you like your ponytails low or want to pull it up high, this sleek look is a winner!

Remember the stretchy headbands of your youth? It’s time to bring them back in a modern way! Embellished headbands, velvet headbands, and turban-style headbands are just a few of the options you can choose from. There are also various ways to actually wear a headband. You can use them to keep a hairstyle in place, wear one near the front of your head as an intentional accessory, or use a skinny ribbon headband to accent a ponytail or bun. A headband is a chic way to style your hair if you haven’t washed it for a few days, or you just want to add some extra pizazz.
