Replace Your “Instaglam” Makeup With These Minimal Trends

As a beauty school, we’re all about keeping up with the hottest trends here at The Salon Professional Academy (TSPA), Cedar Falls. When it comes to makeup, we’re 100% on board with the idea of “less is more”. While we love the super glamorous Instagram makeup trend, we also love a more natural look. Sometimes going back to basics is the best way to refresh your look. If you want to try out the minimal beauty trend this year, here are a few tips!

Start With Skin Care

It all starts with the skin. Before a stitch of makeup touches your face, make sure your skin is in check. This doesn’t mean you need a 12-step routine. It can be as simple as eating healthy, drinking water, and using a cleanser, exfoliant, toner, serum, and moisturizer. When your skin is healthy, it looks better, feels better, and will respond better to makeup. It’s also easier than ever to find skin care products that work for specific skin types. So if you’ve got oily skin, dry skin, or combination skin, there’s a skin care system out there for you!

Create a Focal Point

If you want a natural look that still has a little something special, focus on one specific area of your face. That could be a statement red lip, strong brows, fluttery lashes, or a smoky eye. If you’re used to wearing bold makeup but want to try toning it down, this is a great option. It packs a punch without looking overdone!

Add a Touch of Pink

Pink is one of those subtle colors that always looks beautiful. It looks great as a blush, lipstick, and eye color. Best of all, you can buy multi-use cream products that work in all three areas! A glowy, pink look gives you the fresh-faced look of someone who just came in from a walk in the cold. It’s natural, beautiful, and always in fashion!

Do Lighthanded Eyeliner

Love yourself some winged liner? Try doing it with a lighter hand to create a more minimalistic look. This could mean switching out your liquid liner for a kohl pencil or trading your dark black liner for a more subtle brown shade. Create a thin line and smudge it out for a more natural look that still makes your eyes pop.

Naturalize Your Brows

Intense brows have been popular for the last few years. While these look amazing in photos, try something a little lighter for your day to day life. Brow pencils and tinted brow gels are your best friend. These products distribute color and look super natural when applied with a light hand. The idea is to add color so it looks like your natural eyebrows, rather than creating those overdone Instagram brows.

Add Some Sparkle and Shine to Your Look this Holiday Season!

Happy holiday season from everyone at The Salon Professional Academy (TSPA), Cedar Falls! It’s a beautiful time of year for twinkling lights, sparkling snow, and glowing firelight. Do you know what else can glow this season? Your makeup! Follow these tips to get your best glow ever.

Try Out Glitter Eyeliner

Glitter eyeliner might seem like costume makeup, but it can be a great way to add some serious sparkle to your holiday look! If you want a classic glitter, choose a silver or gold glitter. For something extra special, try a green, blue, pink, or purple glitter liner. Glitter eyeliner looks beautiful layered on top of black winged liner, paired with a smokey eye, or just completely on its own. It’s a great way to mix things up from the same old black eyeliner you’ve been wearing all year long. Be a little bold this season and try it out!

Make Your Face Glow

Ever heard the term “lit from within”? That’s how you want to look during the holiday season! Looking glowy and radiant obviously starts with your skin care routine. Skin tends to get dry during the winter, so make sure you’re using a good combination of moisturizer, toner, and serum to keep things hydrated. Once you’ve got the skin care down, it’s time to go at it with the highlighter! Depending on your highlighting technique, you can create a subtle glow or an extreme shimmer. To avoid looking like a disco ball, stick to areas you literally want to highlight, like the cheekbones, brow bone, and the bridge of your nose.

Get a Palette that Sparkles

Make your holiday glow easy with a palette that does it all. Shimmery eyeshadow/highlight palettes are all over the place, especially during this time of year. With so many options, there’s a palette for anyone’s taste! Like glowy pink and red tones? How about sparkly neutrals or bold metallics? There’s a perfect palette out there for all of these and much, much more! Sparkly palettes also happen to make great holiday gifts. If you’ve been nice this year, consider putting one on your wishlist!

Create Lustrous Lips

Even though matte lips are a reigning trend year after year, we think there’s still a place for the high shine lip. Lip gloss and lipsticks with shimmer are perfect for the holiday season. Glow looks beautiful on the eyes and face, so why not include the lips? When applying a glossy lip, keep in mind that the product will move around more than matte formulas. Exfoliate and moisturize your lips ahead of time, just as you would with a matte lip, to keep things from slipping around too much. Applying a lip pencil beforehand can also help the product stay put throughout the day. To add an extra touch of festivity, use a lip gloss with glitter in it!

Go for the Gold

In the realm of holiday makeup colors, you really can’t get more festive than gold. Luckily, gold makeup is all over the place! Highlighter, eyeshadow, bronzer, nail polish, and even lip gloss can be found in golden tones. It not only adds a festive touch to your makeup, but it’s a great way to create a glowing warmth that’s perfect for combatting the cold weather. This year don’t keep gold reserved for your jewelry. Put it on your face and nails!
