Experience the Redken Difference at TSPA Cedar Falls

If you’re a beauty enthusiast who’s considering enrolling in beauty school, you’ve probably heard about Redken. For over 50 years, this global brand has earned its reputation for excellence within the beauty industry. At The Salon Professional Academy (TSPA), Cedar Falls, our relationship with this world-renowned brand allows us to offer you, the student, a Redken-infused barber styling curriculum.

About Redken

Since it was founded in 1960 by Paula Kent, Redken has represented innovation, creativity, and trendsetting. Today, Redken’s extensive line of products is available in 43 countries across the globe. These salon-grade products are not just used by industry professionals, but students, educators, and consumers. From the revolutionary Color Extend Shampoo and Conditioner, to the beloved All-In-One Multi-Benefit Treatment, Redken products are a go-to when it comes to creating hair that is healthy and strong, but also fashion-forward.

The Redken Curriculum

Redken was one of the first beauty brands to become available to beauty educators and students. As part of the TSPA franchise, we are excited to have access to this beauty curriculum. In our Redken-infused barber styling program, we are able to provide our students, staff, and educators with a variety of resources. These include:

  • Use of Redken’s product line
  • Participation in quarterly trainings from Redken stylists
  • Redken Color Fusion products and trainings
  • Access to Redken Education on Demand
  • Access to the Redken Symposium and Redken Exchange

At TSPA Cedar Falls, we want all of our graduates to leave school with the technical and practical skills they need to succeed in the beauty industry. Working with Redken, a brand that values innovation and one-on-one education, helps us provide students with the tools they need for their future. Redken’s curriculum focuses on hair color fundamentals, design principles, curl principles, thinning principles, and finishing principles. In addition to teaching this core beauty curriculum, we also focus heavily on the business side of the industry. Modern beauty professionals need to know a lot more than just how to make someone’s hair look pretty. They need to know how to use social media to market themselves, create a portfolio of work on Instagram, and build their clientele through networking.

Why TSPA?

On top of our relationship with Redken, we’re also lucky to be a part of the TSPA franchise. Being a part of this network allows us to offer support and create a better educational experience for our students. Even though we’re professional beauty educators, we’re still always learning! The trainings and resources available through TSPA help us continually learn the best ways to support, teach, and empower the students in our barber styling program.

What Makes TSPA Cedar Falls Stand Out?

Beauty school culture is an important part of your overall educational experience. The vibe of a school, events, and day to day life are all key factors in choosing where to attend. Our team at The Salon Professional Academy (TSPA), Cedar Falls has worked hard to create and maintain a welcoming educational environment where individuality and creativity are celebrated!

Culture That’s Unique and Upbeat

At TSPA Cedar Falls, we believe in the power of a positive attitude. From our educators to our students, staying upbeat is what makes our culture so great! To celebrate the incredible, unique students in our barber styling program, we have monthly student appreciation days. Beauty school students work hard every single day. The least we can do is give back a little each month! In addition to giving back to our students, we also do our best to give back to the community around us. For example, sometimes we allow students to wear jeans in lieu of their required black uniform as long as they bring in three cans for the local food bank. We believe in positivity and inclusiveness in all things. That’s why giving back is such an intrinsic part of our culture.

Life as a Student

As a TSPA Cedar Falls student, your daily routine is different based on where you are in your studies. Let us break it down for you!

Students at a Foundational Level

Students will start by clocking in and being greeted by their educator. After this, the class will have some bonding time to chat and recap the day before. After this, it’s time to get into class! This could include starting a new unit, testing out a product/technique from the day before, and then moving on to practical skills. We always play music during this time to get the energy flowing and increase creativity!

Students on the Floor

For senior students, the day also starts with being greeted by your educator and clocking in. Then the student will look at what’s on their book (or agenda) for the day. Many of our senior students are booked with clients for the whole day. When it is a slower day, students get the chance to research and network on social media, take walk-in guests, attend a pop-up class, or work on a mannequin to practice techniques.

Learn and Grow With Friends

We want TSPA Cedar Falls to be a safe place for students to learn, grow, and experiment. Our school is also a great place to make friends and form lasting connections. Spending your days with like-minded individuals who share your passions is a great way to make lifelong friends! The people you meet during school (friends, staff, educators) could also help you find a job after graduation.

Become a Part of Our Culture!

If a future in beauty is your dream, let our barber styling program help you make it a reality! Our welcoming, unique culture could be the perfect place to prepare you for a future in the beauty industry. Contact TSPA Cedar Falls today to apply!

How to Maintain Your Beard During No-Shave November

Thinking of participating in “No-Shave November”? Ready to put on a beanie, flannel shirt, and let your beard go crazy? Before you let things get too wild, remember that a good beard is a well-groomed beard. The team at The Salon Professional Academy (TSPA), Cedar Falls wants you to know that just because it’s November does not mean you need to let your facial hair get scraggly and out of hand! Keep things clean and dapper this November and follow these grooming tips!

Wash Your Beard Regularly

Just like the hair on top of your head, your beard needs to be washed regularly. Our bodies produce natural oils which can cause greasy feeling hair. Washing your beard prevents this natural oil from building up and making the hair feel dirty. However, make sure you’re not overwashing your beard. Frequent washing will strip away those natural oils and leave you with a dry beard. You might assume you can use hair shampoo on a beard, but that’s not the case. Facial hair is different than the hair on your head because it comes into contact with food, drink, and others elements. Using a high-quality beard wash will keep the hair feeling and looking great.

Invest in Beard Oil

Once you’ve washed your beard, restore some of that moisture with beard oil. A good beard oil serves as a leave-in conditioner and balances the natural oils in your beard and on your skin. Your bard oil should be applied once a day after you get out of the shower, since the hair best absorbs oil when it is wet. Beard oils are usually made of natural, essential oils like tea tree, grape seed, argan, and jojoba. Using beard oil not only conditions and moisturizes, it can also prevent viral, bacterial, and fungal infections.

Get a Trim

You get your hair trimmed to keep things looking neat and clean, right? You should do the same for your beard. Regular trims can remove split ends and help your beard grow fuller and thicker. Without trimming, a beard will start to look like a scraggly mess. Getting a trim doesn’t mean taking length off your beard, it’s simply a way to keep things groomed and tidy. At TSPA Cedar Falls, we’re offering a special on beard trimming throughout November so you can keep things looking sleek and tamed.

Buy a Beard Brush and Comb

Another important part of beard grooming is using a beard brush and comb. Beard combs work great for detangling and smoothing hair when it is wet, while beard brushes are best for dry hair. A beard brush is usually made of animal hair like boar or horse, since these materials are known for reducing frizz and tangles and evenly distributing oils throughout hair. Combs are often made of smooth, natural materials like sandalwood, a durable material that helps prevent static.

Keep Your Face Moisturized

If the skin on your face is too dry or too oily, it’s going to affect your beard. When extra oil is produced it can make your beard feel greasy. If your skin is too dry underneath a beard it can start to feel irritable and itchy. Using a daily facial moisturizer keeps your skin hydrated, balanced, and smooth. This makes it easier to grow and take care of a beard. Moisturizer is also extremely important after shaving in order to prevent razor burn, irritation, and dry skin.

Make a Beard Grooming Appointment With Us

At TSPA Cedar Falls the only thing we love more than a good beard is keeping that beard well-groomed and beautiful. Come see us and give your beard a little extra love! We’re offering a free beard trim with every haircut throughout the entire month of November. Schedule your appointment today.

Ready for Autumn? Here Are Some Top Trends to Try This Fall!

Fall is upon us. That means it’s time for cooler temperatures, changing leaves, and of course, fall beauty trends! With all the beautiful styles and colors to choose from, autumn trends are always some of the year’s most beautiful looks. To give you a hand in the decision-making process, we’ve chosen five of our favorite trends for you to try out this fall!

Bold Cheeks and Lips

No matter what year it is, fall is always the season for bold red and purple tones. While a dark, autumnal lip looks great with understated makeup, pairing it with a strong cheek is a fun way to play with color. It’s all about matching your lipstick with a blush in the same color family. The trick is to not go so heavy on the blush that your lips need to compete with your cheeks. If you’re wearing a dark wine-colored lipstick, choose a blush that looks like a watered down version of that color. Going for a classic red? Choose a rosy-toned blush to create the perfect balance!

Strong Brows

With so many eyebrow trends and brow products on the market, bold brows have been a staple trend of the last few years. For strong brows that are still natural, try out an at-home brow staining or tinting product. These products come with a delicate spoolie brush that is designed to fit between each brow hair and create darker, fuller eyebrows without over-shaping them. The strokes you create with these products look like natural hair, rather than filled in or tattooed on eyebrows.

Smudged Eyeliner

For a sultry, night-out look, try the smudged eyeliner trend. Using a pencil or crayon eyeliner, apply it as you normally would on the top and bottom lashline. After this, use a cotton swab or small sponge to soften and smudge the harsh lines. If the smudging is too messy, take another cotton swab, dip it in makeup remover of your choice, and clean up any excess product. The result of this is an edgy, undone look that is perfect for a crisp autumn night on the town.

Sleek Ponytail

This is an easy and oh-so-stylish hairstyle that you can easy create in about two minutes. So if you like to hit the snooze button, or you’re just into a no-fuss routine, a sleek ponytail is a great choice. It looks stunning on straight, smooth hair, but it also works for voluminous curls. Keep the top part smooth by using a comb and smoothing product and gather it all into a ponytail. Whether you like your ponytails low or want to pull it up high, this sleek look is a winner!

Headbands

Remember the stretchy headbands of your youth? It’s time to bring them back in a modern way! Embellished headbands, velvet headbands, and turban-style headbands are just a few of the options you can choose from. There are also various ways to actually wear a headband. You can use them to keep a hairstyle in place, wear one near the front of your head as an intentional accessory, or use a skinny ribbon headband to accent a ponytail or bun. A headband is a chic way to style your hair if you haven’t washed it for a few days, or you just want to add some extra pizazz.

Barber Styling: How It’s Different Than Cosmetology

At The Salon Professional Academy (TSPA), Cedar Falls, we offer a program called barber styling. This program is designed to teach students the skills and techniques taught in cosmetology school with a few twists. You may not know what the difference between cosmetology and barber styling is, but in reality, these two programs are actually much more similar than you might expect!

What Can I Learn in a Barber Styling Program?

In our innovative barber styling program at TSPA Cedar Falls, students are taught theory and foundation classes like:

  • The History of Beauty
  • Sanitation and Safety
  • Law, Ethics, and Service
  • Anatomy and Chemistry
  • The Science of Hair Structure

As with a cosmetology program, in a barber styling program you can also learn to master practical skills in addition to receiving a foundational knowledge of beauty. These skills include:

  • Haircutting
  • Hair coloring
  • Hair texture services
  • Nail care
  • Makeup application
  • Guest services
  • Marketing skills and growing a personal brand
  • Business management skills
  • Product knowledge
  • Beard trimming and shaving techniques

What Can I Learn in a Cosmetology Program?

We don’t offer cosmetology at TSPA Cedar Falls but a typical cosmetology program will usually cover the following concepts:

  • Hair cutting
  • Hair coloring
  • Hair texture services
  • Nail care
  • Pedicuring
  • Makeup application
  • Guest services
  • Marketing skills and growing a personal brand
  • Business management skills
  • Product knowledge

Master Specific Skills

You probably noticed that we don’t offer pedicuring like cosmetology programs usually do. However, we do provide education in men’s shaving techniques. Many men still love receiving a good old-fashioned straight razor shave. With a barber styling education, you can learn how to become a master of this specialized skill. It’s a great skill to add to your service menu and your male clients will thank you for the extra-close shave!

Find Your Future in Barber Styling

Now that you’ve learned the ins and outs of barber styling, get more information about our program! Call TSPA Cedar Falls today to speak with an admissions representative. We’d love to answer any of your questions and help you set up a tour. Let us help you on the way to a career in the exciting world of beauty!

Why Choose an Education in Beauty After High School?

It can be overwhelming to think about what you want to do after high school. Between universities, community colleges, and trade schools, there are a lot of options to sift through. If you’re interested in a creative future and want to enter the workforce sooner, you should consider an education in beauty. Here are a few reasons why!

Start When You Want

When you attend a four-year university or community college, it’s normal to feel pressure to start right after high school ends so your credits are still fresh. For some people, jumping right from high school to a secondary education works, but for others, it doesn’t. If you’d rather get a job and discover what your true passion is before jumping into education, beauty school could be a great option. At The Salon Professional Academy (TSPA), Cedar Falls, we have courses starting every single month, so there’s no rush for you to start right after graduation.

Traditional universities can put off your entrance into full-time work for four years or more. Our barber styling program takes only 2100 hours, or 62 weeks, to complete. This program can be a great way to kickstart your future so you can enter the workforce at a faster pace!
